The STLA program provides additional support to students experiencing difficulty in various areas. We focus primarily on literacy skills, also deal with numeracy skills, enjoying development through the many learning styles. We read aloud in small groups, with focus on phonemic awareness skills, engaging in exploring reading strategies and working on how they can be put into action to optimise individual’s learning. We read many types of texts from plays to newspapers, poetry, fairytales, information reports, to our own hand-written stories. The STLA regularly makes assessments of each student’s progress, reflecting on lessons and encouraging individual students according to their learning styles, individual and cultural needs. The STLA program also extends outside the STLA room, providing in-class support for teachers of students with needs. The STLA teacher is also responsible for the coordination of the MULTILIT Program (Making Up for Lost Time In Literacy) which is run at the school for students from Year 2 to 6. This is a highly successful Reading Program involving volunteers who read with students on a regular basis, monitor and improve their reading skills. |
